Olgrun

The first, most wonderful and most terrible of the Old Gods.
Also known as: The World Shaper, All-Ruler

Olgrun was the first of the Light Born and the last of the Primordials; as such, he straddled the line between cosmic force and embodied intelligence. Like all Light Born, he was a being of the Platonic Field with an innate ability to channel the power of the Source. However, unlike his successors, his connection to the Source was virtually unlimited, which gave him great creative ability but also constantly threatened to overwhelm even his Celestial intelligence.

Olgrun was created by writer Peter Johnson with artists Riccardo Federici and Will Conrad for Action Comics #1043 (July 2022) as a primordial force whose essence had been split into seven parts, one part of which was hidden at the centre of Mongul’s War World.

Archaeological evidence suggests Olgrun was the primordial architect-deity of the Second World epoch. In proto-Gil’Dishpanish, his name is rendered as  \*H₂olg-rūn*, meaning “All-Ruler”. The narrative of his descent into madness and subsequent dismemberment is a classic creation myth motif (Chaoskampf), where a chaotic primordial entity is slain or divided to bring about a stable, ordered world.

Reconstructed Snornii mythology and comparative mythology across discovered worlds consistently portray him as a figure of terrible creative power who drew directly from the Source. In the earliest days of the Universal Second Age, he moulded and created countless worlds of undreamt wonders as wise and benevolent gifts to the new mortal races. His most fabulous creations were said to be the Eight-Fold Marvels of the Second Age, which included the world Godworld of Urgrund (his throne-world, which he shaped from primordial matter and later became the home of his successor Celestials) and the vastness of the Promethean Galaxy.

Vuldarian gene-memory fragments suggest his Olgrun’s consciousness became unstable under this cosmic burden imposed by his unmetered connection to the Source, leading to what inscriptions term *\*mad-haim* (“mind-breaking”). This leads to the most tragic cycle in the recovered mythic fragments, which describe his killing of Anja (*\*H₂enǵh-yeh₂*, “Dream-Weaver”), consistently identified as his daughter and goddess of ephemeral beauty.

Olgrun’s children, the second and more numerous generation of the Olg Gods, were led by three of Olgrun’s sons in a rebellion that cast down their father to safeguard the rest of the Universe. However, they found that it was impossible to kill him outright, so they instead sundered his divine essence into seven parts and entombed each part inside a nightmarish puzzle labyrinth sealed at the heart of the Seven Wandering Worlds, the chaotic moons of Ungrund. Seven Light Born brothers then dedicated the rest of their unaging lives to watching over each of the essences’ cages.

The Anja Cycle tells of how Olgrun slew his favoured daughter in a fit of madness and how his sons conspired to kill and dismember their father. The earliest surviving myths of the Reach Priest caste tell that Olgrun’s body was divided, his flesh becoming the first hive worlds and his dying cries pushing back the primordial nebulae to allow his children to see the stars for the first time. The Daemonite dream-masters tell another version of this myth where Olgrun’s dying tears shaped themselves into the first Daemonite Prince.

Olgrun’s great Serpent Armour was forged by him using the fires of the anti-matter suns of the Prelatix Nebula. That armour survived after his death and was used by Allamarca to create the blasphemous Annihilax using the captured soul of the god Balduur.

Timeline for Olgrun

  1. The Celestials

Birth of the Light Born and the Nyctari

Alone, Olgrun moulds the world Urgrund into his wondrous throne world. He then calls forth two races from the nothingness of the void. To preserve the cosmic balance, the Light Born (or the Celestials), who channelled the power of the Source, and the Night Born (or the Nyctari), who channelled the power of the Greater Darkness, are born in equal measure.

  2. The Celestials

    Olgrun sinks into madness

Olgrun, most terrible of the Old Gods, is slowly being driven mad by the magnitude of the power he mainlines from the Source.

  3. The Celestials

    The sundering of Olgrun

After the insane titan Olgrun lashes out and kills his daughter, Anja, goddess of wistful dreams and forgotten beauty, three Light Born led by Arzuz, god of tempered order, ambush Olgrun. They are able to subdue him, but it is impossible to kill him outright. They divide his essence into seven receptacles and build impossible prison-maze vaults around each of them. These become the seeds of the seven Wandering Worlds, satellites that chaotically orbit Urgrund. Seven Light Born brothers volunteer, agreeing to dedicate their endless, unageing lives to keeping watch over the receptacles.
