Monitor-Kind
The Monitors of Nil or Monitor-Kind are a constant throughout the Multiverse, always amongst the first Primordial life to emerge in each universe. They exist as a self-aware aspect of each Universe, taking on the responsibility for overseeing and recording the history of their native Universe.
Nature
Monitors are considered the only emergent Multiversal race and possess a sophisticated culture. They consider themselves a product of the Overvoid and its entanglement with its constituent worlds. To them, the Overvoid itself is conscious, and Monitor-kind is its attempt to understand itself.
Each Monitor is a reflection of the universe that birthed them. For example, Universe-One and Universe-Three are binary Universes, each existing as the narrative opposite of the other. Thus, their Monitors are polar opposites. The Monitor Incarnate of Universe-One is Mar Nouv and one of the most respected of all Monitor-kind; the Monitor of Universe-Three is Mobius, a would-be conqueror who has previously fought Mar Nouv to a standstill.
Nil

Monitors gather on the world of Nil, which exists in a hidden bubble within Bleed-space separate from any one universe. Nil-space, or simply Nil, is a space where avatars of the Monitors from many Universes can congregate and organise as a society. While a higher-dimensional space, there have been accounts and reports from lower-dimensional (4D) visitors who have been invited there.
The world, as perceived by humans, is said to be a plant-sized city bathed in the dim, eerie glow of a blood-red sky. It is an ancient but well-maintained city. The buildings are a mix of architectural styles: massive, flat, monolithic structures stand alongside tall, dome-topped towers adorned with circular balconies. Their smooth, curved surfaces reflect the crimson light in unsettling, hypnotic patterns. The boulevards are wide and eerily silent, save for the faint hum of alien technology.
Each grand tower is the workspace and hub for a Monitor Orrey, a gigantic bottle-like representation of a single multiversal stream or branch. Teams on incarnate monitors buzz around the Orreys, preferring to observe from outside rather than live within the Universes that birthed them. Whether this distance between avatars and their associated Monitor Superiors is meaningful is unknown.
One famous landmark is the Colossus of Nil, a mile-high statue of “the unknown hero” who laid down his life to save the entire Multiverse. Given the flow of time in Nil, that event may not have happened yet.
Known Monitors
- Mar Novu the Monitor of Universe One, is one-third of his Universe’s Triarch. A battle between him and Mobius, the Anti-Monitor of Universe-Three, left them both drained and forced to retreat into hibernation to recover their strength. Nouv’s son, Dax Novu, continued his father’s duties until corrupted into the form of Mandrakk.
- Mandrakk, the Dark Monitor, was originally Dax Novu, son of Universe One Monitor Mar Novu. Known as the Radiant One by his people, he was a champion amongst the Monitors until he was driven insane by what he considered corruption in the Overvoid (mortal life). He renounced his station and became known as Mandrakk the Dark Monitor before being chained in a sepulchre deep within Nil.
- Mobius, the Anti-Monitor of Universe Three. He was initially a scientist until his experiments with the Anti-Life Equation warped him into the monstrous form of the Anti-Monitor. He established the Weaponeers of Qward to rule his Universe and then sought to conquer the other Universes. A battle between him and Mar Novu of Universe One left them drained and inert, recovering their strength in hibernation.
