The Multiverse

An infinite collection of parallel worlds.

The Multiverse is a continuum of separate parallel universes, each original and prime to its inhabitants. Each Universe is comprised of its own entangled Quantum and Platonic fields. Each Universe in the Multiverse has its own complete history and laws of physics and appears prime to its inhabitants.

Structure of the Multiverse

The Overvoid and the Bleed

The Overvoid is the space between spaces, the enigmatic wild space which contains the Multiverse. The Bleed is the fluid-like medium that fills the Overvoid and the space between the universes of the Multiverse. To Monitor-kind, it is the Ultramemstruum, which they described as the solution in which universes “grow like crystals”.

The Bleed is dangerous and extremely difficult to navigate. Lower-density vein-like channels and arteries run through it and can be used to travel from universe to universe. However, vessels necessary to traverse Bleed space are often vast in scale or hideously advanced.

The Universes

In theory, there are an infinite number of universes in the Multiverse, each with its own distinct set of Quantum Numbers. Salomon Schwartz theorized that universes are fermions that obey the Pauli Exclusion Principle, i.e., no two Universes can occupy exactly the same quantum mechanical state. Each of these would appear prime to its inhabitants and be uniquely identifiable by its unique quantum numbers.

These quantized states give rise to a unique dimensional frequency called the Schwartz Frequency. This frequency can be used to identify objects and individuals from a particular universe and by matching it, a traveller can journey from one universe to another. The universes do not directly abut each other in the Multiverse and instead form higher-dimensional patterns in the Overvoid.

Universes with resonant Schwartz Frequencies appear to share some form of poorly understood entanglement between their respective Quantum and Platonic Fields. Thus, a resonant Universe will not simply be an alternative most probable Quantum Timeline but will be one where events have consistently taken an alternative path. For example, the emergence of new related ideas may have occurred decades earlier in the timeline or individuals favour the particular outcome of certain decisions.

Wells-Allen Membrane

The [[Wells-Allen Membrane is the surface of the local dimensional membrane enclosing each universe (more appropriately, the membrane is the thirteen-dimensional hypersurface of the local Quantum Field; it is the thing that actually vibrates with the Schwartz frequency).

Breaking the surface tension of the Membrane entirely allows a traveller to fully synchronise their frequency with another Universe via the Gardner-Broome Mechanism and truly travel to a different Universe. Without properly accounting for the Membrane and the Gardner-Broome Mechanism, the traveller will remain tethered to their “home” Universe and eventually be pulled back there, irrespective of whether they have temporarily altered their Schwartz Frequency.

Known Universes

Lives across the Multiverse

Each Universe in the Multiverse has some defined difference. It may be a different running of history, a different narrative causality, or an entirely different set of physics. A person who is a policeman in one Universe may be an adventurer in another, an accountant in another, or even a wannabe superhero.

The Branch Dimensional Quantum Number (BDQN) indexes the Universes within a particular local sequence or sub-multiverse. These numbers are assigned by the Challengers Network, a club of multiversal pioneers who first discovered the Multiverse in the 1920s. They described their Universe as Universe-One and its Earth as Earth-One, the first Earth they visited was then Earth-Two.

By the 31st century, 52 numbered Universe have been reliably mapped and publicly documented by travellers from the Challengers Network. However, it is believed that the Challengers hold fragmentary records of hundreds if not thousands of other Universes.

Known universes include:

  • Universe-One: This is a universe where the Universe War of the Neo-Celestials ended with the Lightfall and the subsequent Pact. In its wake, much of the Universe and the Milky Way galaxy were left in a dark age that allowed new young, aggressive empires and warlords to prosper. On Earth, a government “masquerade” concealed the existence of superhumans until the current generation and the formation of the Justice League.
  • Universe-Two: A close parallel of Universe-One, albeit with subtle differences in historical sequencing. The Lightfall happened, but the Pact was never sealed. The Universe War resulted in the mutual destruction of the Neo-Celestials. On Earth, superhumans became public knowledge as “Wonders” shortly before starting a notably different World War Two. The Wonders banded together as a Justice Society whose legacy has continually been upheld into the present generation.
  • Universe-Three: This Universe is a dark reflection of Universe-One where anti-matter dominates, and the Greater Darkness is marginally dominant over the Source. Here, individuals who would be great heroes are instead villains, and vice versa. On Earth, countries are subservient to criminal syndicates. The countries had kept their own superhuman masquerade until the superhumans banded together to create their own Crime Syndicate.

History of Exploration (Earth-One perspective)

1920s – Practical and Theoretical Discovery.

The first discoveries of the Multiverse, both theoretically and practical occurred on Earth-One during their 1920s. The Challengers, a group of adventurers and travellers, encountered a Multiversal rift in the Adirondack Mountains. That led them to discover other Earths, including versions of themselves from what we now know as Earth-Two and Earth-Three. They were able to seal the rift, but Challenger’s teams from multiple Universes would have sporadic contact with each other for centuries to come. Their loose inter-dimensional association has assumed responsibility for mapping and cataloguing their neighbouring Universes.

It was also during the 1920s that Professor Salomon Schwartz at Heidelberg University first conducted speculative work into the Quantum Field as a singular phenomenon in the 1920s. Schwartz postulated that the Quantum Field could be modelled as a 12-dimensional object whose “surface” vibrated with a natural fundamental frequency, now called the “Schwartz Frequency”.

Timeline for The Multiverse

  1. The First World

    The Big Bang

In the Overvoid, something occurs to generate the formation of a new multiversal strand. A string of new resonant Universes come into existence together. In Universe-One, as in the other new universes, existence bursts forth from a single point, and time and space explode into being. The First World, the Primordial Age, begins.

  2. The First World

    Matter/Anti-Matter Asymmetry

The asymmetry between matter and anti-matter is broken. In Universe-One, and in most other universes in its multiversal stream, matter dominates. In Universe-Three, it is antimatter that becomes dominant.

  3. Schwartz Frequency

Salomon Schwartz (43) publishes his pivotal work proposing the existence of a dimensional frequency, latterly named the Schwartz Frequency, that separates Universes in the Multiverse.
