Tolui

Youngest son and general of Genghis Khan

Tolui (1192-1232), fourth and youngest son of Genghis Khan, served as a general during his father’s reign. Though never Great Khan himself, his influence on the Mongol Empire was significant – two of his sons, Möngke Khan and Kublai Khan, would become Great Khans, while a third, Hulegu Khan, would establish the Ilkhanate in Persia. Known for his military prowess and loyalty, Tolui commanded successful campaigns against the Jin Dynasty and in Central Asia.

His early death at age 40 was attributed to shamanic ritual sacrifice, where he allegedly offered his own life in exchange for his brother Ögedei Khan’s recovery from illness. This act embodied the Mongol ideal of loyalty while conveniently removing a potential rival claimant to power. His widow Sorghaghtani Beki proved to be one of the most influential women in the empire, skillfully manoeuvring to place her sons in positions of power and ultimately reshaping the empire’s trajectory.
